Do Art Right

January 21, 2013

Inside Outside

I spent about eight hours in the car today delivering sculpture for art fairs in Hong Kong and New York and boy was my mind busy. There was little traffic and plenty of silence and that was a good combination although I could have done with a little less snow. I was thinking about the constraints put upon us from the moment we are born (free), through the constant bombardment that engineers us carefully into compliance. The reason my thoughts are drawn to this is because in the search for ideas and a meaning to my art I feel restricted. These restricted feelings appeared in my drawings firstly, communicated in a fairly subconscious way and as I have tried to open up I have become aware of just how tethered I am by convention and structure. It has altered my opinion of the conventional structures underpinning the art world, to a point where I feel art criticism and art about art to be an irrelevance (in my own life). That is liberating for me because I no longer have to jump through those hoops and I can now focus on making art about life with an emphasis on truth and freedom.
It also kind of struck me that as you go through life you are constantly bombarded and channelled to a point that almost doesn’t allow you to be you and that the search for self and freedom returns you to the exact thing you were born with.
As an artist you exist on the margins of society like a maverick and it is this existence that gives you a slightly different perspective on life and society, I see it as a privilege and like to share my thoughts and what I feel is my insight. 😉
