Art World Rebel

February 20, 2013

I’ve got a little bit used to writing now and I even enjoy it a bit, it feels liberating when you share your views and I am starting to feel at one with my thoughts actions and creative output. That is a big step forward in my life because I now truly have the courage to stand up for what I believe in and I actually know what I believe in too. Fighting off the distractions of convention and compliance gave me the space to rediscover the meaning of art and a true reason for producing it. Although all  this may sound a bit grandiose and exaggerated it isn’t, the fact was that I felt totally enchained and caught up in a knotted web of nonsense that is the art world.  I now know I can move on and operate with freedom and the work I produce will be based on my thinking and not on some Mickey Mouse criteria for plinth adornment and gallery decoration. In some ways my work won’t change that much because I am still the same person but the subtle change will be a great chasm in my reckoning. So I now look forward to working with great pride and belief and gone are the days of compromise because I just can’t stomach the thought of conversations and interactions based on pretence and congeniality. No from now on I have to keep it real and march on If I’m to complete my life’s mission.
All this change really came about from a badly dented pride and an overwhelming feeling of dissatisfaction, in some ways I was living a life that I had no real control of which is ridiculous considering that I have never really worked for anyone else. Perhaps that was why my situation became intolerable because I only really had myself to blame and that is  the bottom line. So while I am outspoken about many things and will continue to be I also take the responsibility for my own actions.
I do feel that we are on the cusp of a great change in the art world, marked by a shift of emphasis and power as communications improve. It’s about time really as the established (elitist) hierarchical order becomes increasingly irrelevant, I mean who really cares about some greedy rich banker buying a Van Gogh for a hundred million pounds. It will be interesting to see how things develop and I just hope it is the artists who lead the way into the new era through pioneering art and not through commerce led initiatives. Of course you can never know what will happen so all you can do is work towards a goal and hope like minded people will do the same. As long as art is the winner because I just hate to see the denigration of art through the vulgarity of the art market.
