Drawing tenous conclusions and opening Doors

September 9, 2013

I’ve spent some time sketching ideas partly based on  a kind of personal mythology, looking to my own life and using a combination of personal elements to convey my story or myth. The drawings became very personal at times and almost brutal but the exercise has been invaluable to me on different levels, taking me into new areas and deepening my search. My approach to drawing is quite open at the moment I usually draw round the edge of the paper then just start ,  I want my drawings to convey both subconscious  and conscious thoughts plus whatever else falls into the mix. The main thrust of this work is exploring creativity and free expression, it’s not about product and marketable merchandise it’s about art.

I now know that I’ve turned a huge corner in my personal approach to art, it’s been my greatest challenge to date and for much time I’ve been lost in the search. It meant that I had to make art in an insular way in order to make it in its own right free from the conventional and dogmatic expectations of the rather contrived arts establishment. It’s like life grooms you into ways of thinking and stepping out is so difficult because the pressure really starts when you want to be different and that is because it threatens the status quo and that’s uncomfortable for some. There is a deep philosophical aspect to art that is so important yet it can be subverted into convenient formats by the systems we live under. At the heart of this lies a contrived necessity for the marketing of art where myths are born through the infallible art and artists supply the pay masters with art a plenty, type cast into mediocrity with their relentless production. What I’m talking about here is how capitalism is destroying art that is real, dirty and dangerous because it undermines one of the most powerful systems of control. I only know this through my struggle to break free from the conventions that held me firmly in place as an artist,  I also know that as a free spirit these systems and the  establishment make it almost impossible to survive doing what I do.  But my unpredictable approach yields such interesting ideas and thoughts that it’s hard to resist because it brings great meaning to my life, what I feel is wisdom and a deeper philosophical understanding of being.

So now I sit on the cusp of a new way forward but it’s fragile and I can only just hold on to the thoughts that brought me here, I’m hoping that through writing that I can make more sense of it all or at least find a simple way of articulating my approach. In summary I would have to say that my art comes about through a personal reflection regardless of product, outcome or expected reaction as opposed to making art based on a product designed for a specific reaction and tailored for selling. If we don’t have freedom in art then we really have no true freedom in society and that is a problem. So for all our perceived sophistication freedom and knowledge where are we really?

Here are some of the sketches
