Dusting down Soul~Fields

October 17, 2014

The time has come to take soul~fields out of storage, to dust it down, mount the figures on bases and re-evaluate the whole project. I have moved a long way conceptually in the past year and my  aesthetic sensibility has broadened sufficiently to take the project through a significant development. During this time I believe world events have moved consciousness globally and the significance of women as a powerful force has broadened to encompass a far greater breadth of possibility. Events have led me to believe that I can introduce new elements and expand the metaphorical content through a bolder approach to my figure modelling. This in turn should deliver a greater context making the work more relevant as a contemporary staement, whilst maintaining a connection withe timelessness. As yet I’m working with the kernel of an idea, but one I feel will offer some significance to my life. It is also about confidence and finding the courage to jump once again into an unknown area of study, to take the risk and believe there is something in the vague notion that is driving me forward. I believe once I start work on it again that the ideas will flow and evolve through all the processes that I employ to further my creativity.  Although I’ve started to draw out ideas and mount the existing figures on bases, it will be a few weeks before I can start the new series of figures.

Upon reflection I feel that I made some interesting statements through some of these figures but my cautionary approach is evident and I realise that exploring this concept with a more complex and organic approach to expression is possible. To do this I will have to take risks and also explore some ugly aesthetics in order to gain a breadth that currently eludes me.

There are still two boxes of soul~field figures secreted in the dark recesses of my studio, which I hope to liberate and place around my work area, so that I can sit surrounded by them and contemplate the entire collection.

There is so much potential in this project, if I can comprehend the enormity of it and find a visual narrative to tie in all the elements.

Trying to keep all these ideas together in my mind is quite a complicated process. 🙂

When I look back at all this work it doesn’t surprise me that I’m so exhausted at the moment.

So this is my new starting point 🙂

  1. Finding the narrative helps so much, is a continual issue for me, too. It really does help to place the work all around you so that you can see it all at once.
