The humility in being frank

July 18, 2015

I think that as an artist you offer a vision, a vision which you have to cultivate and realise through the trails of life, circumstance and real world pressures. It can be hard to maintain a focus under such pressure and because of this life can be very testing at times, even toxic. Keeping this vision requires a single-minded approach because there will be times when there is no interest what so ever in what you do, there will also be hostility and  not necessarily because you are going in the wrong direction. Of course there will be times of recognition and praise which equally lead towards distraction as you become seduced by the rewards of praise.

I find the challenge of art to be quite amazing and have grown to accept the torment upon my soul because the upside is a reward so deep and strong that nothing I have ever experienced compares to it. To have attained my own achievements, has entailed a massive personal journey, I’ve turned my back on superficial success and found the courage to realise my own personal vision. From the outside it often appears that I take the counter intuitive options but the reality from within is that I protect myself from caustic influences which dilute my possibilities. It’s been a battle which at times felt impossible but eventually I found the strength to realise a vision and a conceptual ability which feels to have gone beyond my earlier vision.

My achievements are only relative to my own existence and that is all that matters for me because I’m not part of any parade or competition. I was never competitive and I’ve grown to hate the folly of hierarchy as a mechanism for society and because of this I have in fact set myself free. I no longer feel a need to have a universal appeal or outward recognition from society, which is why I can make what I like and happily share it. If people don’t like what I do, I’m now fully able to understand and accept their points of view, don’t get me wrong I’d rather people related to what I do, but what is more important is that I make what I truly believe in.
