Should I sketch or should I sculpt now

If I sketch there will be trouble

I’ve been working with three sketchbooks, all of which I’ve completed in the last few days and I was toying with the idea of stopping the drawing for a while. But it’s become a bit like an addiction, because it feels like a passport to freedom, so I bought myself a new one today just in case I wake up in a cold sweat.

The last sketchbooks have been more successful than usual in that I’ve managed to complete all 130 drawings without any outright rejects. But more importantly I’ve been able to move my ideas on and venture towards greater extremes with my conceptual ability. I feel my drawing is improving as well as I move towards that freedom of being able to draw exactly what I feel and because of that there is a oneness which no longer inhibits my thinking through technical weakness.

I know at some point I will have to return to thinking about income, but these times of pure creativity are what art is all about for me and I cherish them dearly. In these brief moments I feel able to define my truth and understand my life.

I firmly believe in the idea of synaptic plasticity in that whatever you apply your mind to, enhances the part of the brain that deals with those actions. And so with my art I feel that the more time and energy I concentrate into the particular areas of personal interest will yield some satisfactory developments. With my equestrian compositions I feel about ready to make some new sculptures because I think that I’ve moved forward and found some new ideas, but I’m really looking for a significant breakthrough and I’m not sure if I’ve found it in my drawing or whether I will have to discover it through the process of sculpting.
But now I must go for the night is young and I have an empty sketchbook to engage with 🙂
