Art with a purpose

Where I stand today as an artist bears no relation to what I ever expected being an artist was. In fact I would go as far as saying that art is not what I once percieved it to be. And I’ve reached these conclusions through my relentless pursuit of trying to produce art without compromise. I’ve always believed that it is possible to create art from a deep inner truth, which is fundamental to human creativity. Art which doesn’t entail jumping through hoops, hurdles and obstacle courses in order to court favours with the powers that be.

Firstly what  I discovered is that my purpose as an artist was not to produce commodities for the art market or for investment purposes. With this regard I do not actively look to sell to collectors, institutions or court publicity or favours within any of societies arts  institutions. The reason I write this is because I found that aspiration and ambition within the system was a distraction and influenced the decision making process of creativity.

Though it is hard to cleanse yourself of the engrained belief system we are indoctrinated with, art actually helps you to see through the veils of distraction and allows you connect with something beyond convention. A place of freedom where you feel free to explore whatever impulse comes to mind or appears, it’s like your eyes and mind open up to the unexpected. And the unexpected may appear to have no reason or even make sense, which in itself is a reflection of the truth and mystery of being.

For me this is the magic of art, the truth and sincerity of creativity, an ungoverned freedom without expectation and this is the point which I’m starting to touch upon. I find it exciting even though it has demolished and deconstructed the dogma which previously held my life together. Now I feel like an artist that is neither good or bad, because art is about human expression and not a parade of vanities, it is not quantifiable by simplistic markers of merit.

Have a beautiful day ❤
